Viola Katherine Hirst

Viola Katherine (Vi) HIRST (Mulcair), 88, passed away peacefully on September 22nd, 2018 in Toronto, surrounded by her loving family.
Vi was born on March 11th, 1930 in Montreal to John and Viola (Scanlan) Mulcair who, along with her brothers Gerry, Phil, and Kevin, preceded her in death. She grew up in NDG and attended St. Paul’s High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) from Marianopolis College, where she was active in drama, basketball, and the yearbook. Upon graduation, she worked as a purchasing agent for C-I-L, before taking a position with SunLife Insurance. Vi married Franklin Charlton Hirst on October 16th, 1954 in Montreal and was a devoted wife until his passing in 2012. Their love for each other shines on.
She was a loving mother to their three sons, having no greater joy than being with family. She logged thousands of miles taking her boys to hockey games, ball games, soccer matches, diving meets, and Scouting events in St. Lambert and nationally. She remained a Montreal Canadiens fan her entire life. Always busy and fiercely competitive, she loved lawn bowling and won multiple tournaments, including the Ontario Senior Triples Championship in 2009. Vi and Frank had a love of world travel and shared many adventures around the globe. Ogunquit, Maine was a special place for both of them.
Vi had a sharp mind, enjoyed playing bridge, and could often be seen with a crossword puzzle in hand. She played word, card, and other games with her children and grandchildren for many, many hours. Vi was a dedicated volunteer and organizer throughout her life, being of service to numerous schools, the Canadian Diving Association, the Glenridge Lawn Bowling Club, and Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by her sons, Eric (Patty), Les (Pat), and Jeff (Anna) and by her grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew, Phil, Sarah, Maddie, and Talia. She will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, November 5 in St. Catharines with Msgr. Leo Clutterbuck of St. Julia’s Roman Catholic Church, officiating. A short service will follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. A celebration of her life will take place at 2 PM at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, 70 Westchester Avenue. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, those interested in making a memorial contribution may consider a gift to Doctors Without Borders or the charity of their choice in Vi’s name. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the caregivers at Michael Garron Hospital.

Will greatly miss my dear friend & neighbour for over 60 years. Her tremendous spirit & hearty laugh will always stay with me. Our children grew up together & learned the gift of friendship & giving back to society. They are the gift that keeps on giving.

    Dear Eric, Les and Jeff,
I was a great admirer of your Mom and remember with fondness the many hours I spent with her. At first it was working on Home and School projects at the Elementary School, then playing bridge and then enjoying partying together with our husbands and friends. Please accept my condolences – I am sure you will all miss her greatly.
