PENNY (previously YOUNG, nee HILL): Lillian Loreen
At the NHS General Site- Saturday March 24, 2018. Lillian in her 90th year, a very talented creative and artistic gentlewoman in the truest sense. Dearly loved mother of Susan Young. Pre-deceased by her first husband Alexander T. Young (1963) and her second husband Reginald M. Penny (2006); sisters Doris Rhoda Barnhart (1979) and Edith Catherine McAloney (2001) and parents Victor John Hill and Minnie Winifred (nee Bodeker). Lillian was also the dearly loved great-aunt of Deborah Lee Hance and great-great aunt of Sabrina Hance and Joshua Ryan and their children. Lillian also leaves behind another great-neice, great-nephew, their families, and cousins in BC and England. Lillian was sole proprietor of Lorene Beauty Studio for many years and later an equal partner in Boaz Junction with her second husband, all while producing beautiful ceramic and porcelein doll pieces. She worked tirelessly in volunteer roles, first, as a founding member of the United Animal Protection Society (1970-1980), following which as a founding member and volunteer of the Animal Assistance Society (1980-1993) and most recently as a staunch silent supporter of the work of Pets Niagara (2011-2018). She also worked as a literacy volunteer, a post in which she was so pleased to be able to share her gift of reading and writing with those whose own literacy skills needed improvement. Her spirit was indomitable. Lillian had suffered a life-altering stroke in 1993 yet she very seldom let her considerable disabilities stand in her way. In her later years, she took to drawing and sketching wedding gowns and bridal accessories with a view to translating those into commercial products. She was proud of her accomplishments in business and life. Lillian had been a member of Christ Church Unity (Hamilton) and formerly a member of First Grantham United Church where she also sang as a member of the choir. In keeping with Lillian’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted by PASSFIELD MORTUARY SERVICES, 341 Linwell Road St. Catharines. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations to Pets Niagara would be very much appreciated.
