William Wallace (Bill) Liddell
March 28, 1942 – February 27, 2019
Peacefully, with family at his side, in St. Catharines, on February 27.
William was Professor Emeritus at Brock University, where he taught Management and International Business starting in 1982. After earning his Ph.D. at Penn State in 1970, he taught at Virginia Tech and the College of William & Mary. A world traveler, he also spent time teaching abroad in China, the former Yugoslavia, India, Pakistan, the U.K. and Australia, as well as some time at Kansas State University in the US. Bill was a great conversationalist, sports history buff, and a unique character whose wit and wisdom charmed and influenced many people around him. He was a dedicated youth basketball and baseball coach and mentor, spending several years in Niagara as a basketball coach at Sir Winston Churchill High School, where he led teams to the SOSSA Championship in both 1984 and 1987. He was very proud that in two games all 15 players on the 1987 team scored a field goal. Bill also acted as an Assistant Coach for Brock’s 1992 National Championship team. In addition to teaching and coaching, his dedication to helping young people included volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Kansas, Pennsylvania and Ontario. He loved camping, canoeing, hiking, fishing and outdoor adventure, spending many summers with his family and friends exploring the great national, state and provincial parks of North America. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bill settled in Niagara in the 1980s and considered Canada his home. He spent many wonderful years with first wife Carol Jean and second wife Sandra Lee.
Bill is predeceased by his beloved mother Elizabeth and father William, and is greatly missed by his sons, Erik (KellyAnn) and Douglas, granddaughter Erin Kathleen and her mother Robin, sister Janet (Larry), nieces Michelle (Dave) and Beth Lynne (Keith), grandnieces Amanda, Sarah, Emma and Riley, grandnephew Zachary, and many cousins on the Liddell and Kerr sides of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Catharines-Thorold and District or a charity of choice.
Private family services and a celebration of life will be held in St. Catharines and in Pittsburgh at a future date.
